State governments will be forced into more transparency about how much they spend on training and apprenticeships – including when they secretly reduce spending – according to training sector experts.

That’s part of the $2 billion package of new federal money to subsidise apprentice wages and create 340,000 training places.

Claire Field and Associates, which advises on the training sector, said the offer by Canberra to match state spending on training will oblige them to sign up to the new National Partnership Agreement on Skills Reform which is in the pipeline.

This will result in much higher levels of disclosure on state spending on training.

State auditors in Queensland, NSW and Victoria have warned mismatches in spending and revenue in state TAFE systems have gone unnoticed owing to a lack of transparency.
