Why Sydney’s plumbers are so much more than just poo movers

These days, plumbers do much more than unblock toilets and fix leaky taps

Let’s be honest. When people think of plumbers, the first thing that usually comes to mind is… ahem… well, poo! It seems most people think all we do all day is unblock toilets and fix leaky taps.

But believe us – there’s so much more to plumbing then heading out with a plunger in one hand and a shifting spanner in the other. Here’s a little insight into the glamorous world of plumbing…

Argghh… my plumbing is stuffed! Can you fix it?

In Australia, according to the Master Plumbers Association of NSW, there are two types of licensed plumbers:

  • Construction/Commercial plumbers, specialising on the installation of plumbing systems into new houses and buildings (and with Sydney’s growth, construction/commercial plumbers are kept incredibly busy!), and
  • Maintenance plumbers, who focus on repairing and upgrading existing plumbing.

These days, most plumbers have experience in both construction and maintenance. However, some do specialise, such as us. With a focus on large-scale projects, Limcora is a construction/commercial plumbing company, providing specialised plumbing and drainage solutions for developments, new homes and commercial systems across Sydney.

So beware – not all plumbers are created equal! If you’re at a barbecue talking to your friend’s mate about the job you need doing next weekend, it’s probably best to check first.

The six streams of plumbing… it’s not a wee thing

When it comes to all the things a plumber can do, you can see we’re a talented bunch.

Water supply

Plumbers are responsible for installing the hot and cold water to your bathrooms and kitchens.  We also service, repair, supply and install all hot water systems, including:

  • Gas hot water systems (effective and energy-efficient water heating)
  • Electric hot water systems (install the right system for your needs and budget)
  • Solar hot water systems (reduce greenhouse gases and your bills by using the sun)
  • Instantaneous hot water systems (reduce costs with water heated only as needed), and
  • Commercial hot water systems (solar and/or conventional water heating designed to suit).

We can also connect rainwater tanks for garden irrigation and flushing toilets. And if you’re interested in a more in-depth recycled water system, we’ve got you covered.

Sanitary plumbing

Ok, so here’s where we deal with the Mr Stinkies of the world! All home and commercial buildings need sanitation – generally known as toilets, basins and sinks. From planning the layout of a sanitary system through to installation and connection, your plumber is in the thick of it.

We install all fixtures, as well as drains and waste pipes, and connect them to the fixtures. We also locate and clear blockages (time to get the plunger out!), and install septic systems, tanks and pumps.

As it turns out, I don’t own a garbage disposal.”
Demetri Martin, Comedian

Gasfitting

There’s nothing like a hot shower, but unfortunately, it’s a luxury many of us take for granted! It’s not until your gas hot water service stops working that you realise you need a plumber to fix or replace it.

We also look after gas heaters and cooktops. If you’ve got a caravan or mobile home, you need a plumber to install and test your LPG and natural gas fitting lines. Same if you have any watercraft or mobile workplace with gas connected. And while we’re doing your installations and repairs, we also check you have the correct ventilation in place.

Drainage

Ever wondered where all the water goes when it rains? Or where all the waste from your house goes?

The drainage guys and girls are responsible for digging trenches and laying stormwater and sanitary drains. Got a blockage? These are the same plumbing legends that will get in there to clear and repair any underground drainage systems when you have a stormwater drain blockage, blocked sewer drain or (almost!) any other blockage.

Roofing

A leaking roof can start off as a small annoyance but quickly turn into a major disaster. Almost a sub-speciality, roofing plumbers repair roof leaks and guttering, as well as fabricate and install metal roofing, gutters and downpipes. Some also install skylights and vents, and others will also clean your roof, gutters and downpipes.

If you need a roofing plumber, it’s always best to check that they’ve undergone additional training for working at heights.

Mechanical Services

This one is another sub-speciality for the plumbers, which is highly specialised and quite technical. It involves mechanically heating, cooling and ventilating homes or commercial buildings, typically by installing hydronic heating, ducted heating, evaporative coolers and split systems. Mechanical plumbers also fabricate and install sheet metal ductwork. Other areas of expertise include installing and maintaining medical gas systems and equipment for hospitals and vet clinics.

So… more to our days than taps and toilets

So, you see, there’s more to our days than taps and toilets. And the next time you’re at a party and someone says they’re a plumber, don’t be afraid to shake their hand. Cos after all, to be a plumber’s friend… you’ve got to take the plunge(r)!
